Frequently asked questions

x-top FAQs

  • Q

How is x-top different to other products?

    A

x-top is a sheath that covers the penis. This makes it more discreet and less likely to leak than traditional incontinence products for men.

  • Q

Is x-top suitable for all types of male urinary incontinence?

    A

x-top has been designed to effectively control any leakage that might result from loss of bladder control. It comes in three levels of absorbency: moderate, heavy and overnight. But x-top isn’t designed to replace visiting the toilet!

  • Q

How is urine absorbed and how can x-top absorb such large amounts?

    A

Our patented SuperCore® technology lets each x-top pouch absorb an amazing amount. This core is made from super-absorbent polymers, structured to draw liquid up through the fabric and spread out equally across the whole pouch.

  • Q

Can the fastening be opened and adjusted once on?

    A

Yes, the fastening can be opened and re-fastened as many times as you like. The flexible fastening (hook and loop) can be attached anywhere on the pouch, so you can get a perfect fit quickly and securely.

  • Q

How long can I wear an x-top pouch?

    A

You should change your x-top as often as necessary, but at least once a day.

  • Q

Can x-top leak through its seams?

    A

    No, x-top can’t leak that way, as it’s ultrasonically sealed. So it’s 100% leakage-free.

  • Q

    Can x-top cause skin irritation?

    A

x-top pouches are dermatologically tested and latex-free, to avoid common skin irritants. But in the unlikely event of an allergic reaction, stop use immediately.

What is incontinence

  • Q

    What is incontinence?

    A

Incontinence is when you pass urine without meaning to. Male urinary incontinence is very common; this means you have less control over where, when, and how much urine you pass. The amount of leakage can vary from one drop to everything in your bladder.

  • Q

    What can cause incontinence?

    A

Incontinence can have many causes, which include:
    – weakness or damage to the surrounding muscles
    – diabetes (types 1 and 2) – an enlarged prostate
    – increasing age (particularly for people over 80)
    – as a result of a prostate operation
    – neurological illness
    – multiple scleroses
    – Alzheimer’s disease
    – Different types of cancer
    – Urinary stones
    – Parkinson’s

  • Q

What are the different types of incontinence?

    A

    – Urge incontinence: this is when you feel an intense urge to pass urine without warning; urine may leak as you feel this sensation, or soon afterwards
    – Stress incontinence: “stress” in this case means your bladder is under pressure, for example when you cough or laugh, you may find urine leaks out
    – Mixed: it’s possible to have a mixture of stress and urge incontinence
    – Overflow incontinence: if some obstruction prevents the bladder from fully emptying, your bladder may let urine may leak past the blockage without your control

Living with incontinence

  • Q

    Talk to your doctor

    A

Your doctor can advise you on the next steps, and how you can adjust your routine to feel more comfortable. Before your appointment, it’s helpful to keep a short diary of your exact symptoms, to help determine which type of incontinence you might have.

  • Q

    Pelvic floor exercises

    A

Contracting and relaxing the muscles that control your bladder can help you to overcome some types of bladder weakness. Talk to your docotr about which exercises should work best for you.

  • Q

    Make changes at home

    A

Some very simple adjustments can make a big difference: this could mean making sure you have enough room to store and dispose of incontinence products, and keeping routes to the bathroom clear of cables and other objects, if you have to go in a hurry.

  • Q

    Drink enough water

    A

You need to drink around 50 to 68 fl oz. each day to avoid constipation. Keeping your fluid levels high also helps your bladder muscles to function properly.

  • Q

Create a routine for leaving the house

    A

Have a cache of incontinence products handy so you can always take some with you, and keep a small plastic bag or two on you, in case you find there’s no trash when you go to the toilet out and about. And of course, always go to the toilet before you leave.

You’re not alone.
